Mr. Thomas’ desire to establish his foundation emanates from research studies indicating an increase in the youth poverty rate. Presently, statistics suggests this level has grown to 50% in the metropolitan area. As a result, several inner city schools in the metropolitan area have been designated as “Persistently Lowest Achieving” by the U.S. Department of Education. In order to combat these disturbing trends, RTF works to directly address these problems alongside the community by offering a fresh approach, and initiatives supported by strategic plans and other nonprofit partners.
“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. A mentor is someone who allows you to know that no matter how dark the night, in the morning joy will come. A mentor is someone who allows you to see the higher part of yourself when sometimes it becomes hidden to your own view.”
— Oprah Winfrey
Youth participating in the RTF Elite Sports Division will be partnered with well-trained/screened volunteer mentors, who will be role models providing age appropriate guidance and advice. These mentors will serve as a big brother/sister, advocates, and advisors which will participate in fun educational activities and field trips.
This program will focus on the impoverished youth between the ages 10-17, often coming from households living in poverty stricken areas, especially single parent households.
